Let’s get started on making this delicious and spicy black bean hummus!

What You Need:

1 15-ounce can of black beans, drained and rinsed

1 15-ounce can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed

2 garlic cloves, minced

2 tbsp tahini

4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Juice of 1 lime

1 tsp ground cumin

Salt, to taste

Cilantro, for garnish

Step 1: Mince Your Garlic

Start by mincing your 2 garlic cloves very finely. You don’t want any large chunks of garlic in your hummus- it’s just too strong otherwise.

Step 2: Blend Your Ingredients

Now that your garlic is minced, add all the ingredients into a blender or food processor, including 1 15-ounce can of black beans, drained and rinsed, and 1 15-ounce can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed. Add in the 2 tablespoons of tahini and 4 tablespoons of olive oil, as well as juice of 1 lime. Finally sprinkle in a teaspoon of ground cumin, plus some salt to taste.

Blend all these ingredients together until they are fully mixed and the consistency is smooth. If needed add more lime juice or tahini until you get your desired consistency.

Step 3: Serve Your Hummus

Once your hummus has been thoroughly blended and has reached your desired consistency, serve it immediately with some fresh cilantro sprinkled over the top for some extra color and flavor. You could also add some banana chips, sliced veggies or flatbread on the side for a tasty appetizer.

Enjoy the heat from the spicy black bean hummus with every bite!

Substitutions and Variations

There are plenty of ways to make this spicy black bean hummus even more exciting! Here are some substitutions and variations you can try:

– Chickpeas vs Black Beans: If you don’t have black beans on hand, chickpeas would make an excellent substitute. The flavor will be slightly different, but still delicious.

– Canned Corn Relish: Topping your hummus with a spoonful of canned corn relish will add an interesting texture and sweet flavor that complements the spicy kick.

– Ditch the Tahini: If you don’t have tahini or just want to switch things up, try making this hummus without it. Instead, use extra virgin olive oil and maybe a little extra lemon juice to achieve a smooth consistency.

– Switch up the Spiciness: Adjust the amount of jalapeño used to make the hummus more or less spicy depending on your preference. You can increase or decrease the number of jalapeños used or omit them altogether and use sriracha or hot sauce instead.

– Add Some Crunch: Top your spicy black bean hummus with banana chips or pita chips for a crunchy texture that perfectly complements the creamy hummus.

– Lantana Hummus: You can swap the homemade version for store-bought lantana hummus, which usually contains traditional ingredients such as tahini, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different flavors and ingredients until you find what works best for you.

Once you have made this spicy black bean hummus, it’s time to put it on display for everyone to enjoy. This hummus has a bold and unique flavor that pairs well with a variety of dishes. One of my favorite ways to enjoy it is by serving it with pita bread, carrot or cucumber sticks, or some crispy tortilla chips for a crunchy texture.

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

This hummus is versatile and pairs well with veggies, pita chips, and crackers.

One of the benefits of this spicy black bean hummus recipe is how easy it is to prepare in advance, making it a perfect dish to bring to your next party or potluck. You can make the hummus up to 2 days ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the fridge.

To store the hummus properly, cover its surface with a thin layer of olive oil and seal with a lid or plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out. Before serving, give it a quick stir to ensure that the ingredients are evenly distributed.

If you want to reheat the hummus, allow it to come to room temperature first before placing it in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat on medium power for about 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between until it reaches your desired temperature.

However, bear in mind that reheating the hummus may alter its texture, making it creamier and smoother than when served chilled. If you prefer the texture of freshly made hummus, consider making smaller batches more frequently rather than reheating larger portions.

Overall, this make-ahead and storing method ensures that you can enjoy this delicious spicy black bean hummus anytime you crave it without compromising its taste or freshness.
